Its common name is "Hen-of-the-Woods", although it has neither wings nor legs. You see, we are not talking about poultry, but rather about a huge mushroom which weighs more than 80 kg and is 2.2 metres long, one of the biggest ever seen in Italy.
Some members of the Mycological Association of Pergola, one of the most active in the country, counting more than 600 members, found it near the city. The scientific name of the mushroom is Grifola Gigantea, it's edible and is part of the Saprophyte family.
This is good publicity for the city of Pergola, already famous for its golden bronzes, the only ones left from Roman times (dating back between 50 and 30 BCE), and its National White Truffle Fair, which is holding its 18th edition this year (6th-13th-20th October 2013).
