Mexico: Tamaulipas' onion production continues ranking in the top places

Contributing 11.21 percent of the national market, up to 200,000 tonnes a year, Tamaulipas is still within the first three spots in the production of onion in the country.

The saturation of some markets, however has brought them some problems in the marketing of the product, said Gerardo Ramirez Vazquez, President of the Onion Product System in Tamaulipas.

He said that they planned to have 6,000 hectares of white, yellow and red varieties of onions, a production that is largely exported to the United States and sold in Mexico, for this vegetable's next crop cycle (Spring - Summer 2013).

They expect the weather to be helpful, "we do what we have to and Mother Nature decides. Fortunately the crops have been moist thanks to rainfalls. "

Onions are mainly grown, he recalled, in the municipalities of Altamira, Gonzalez, Llera and Xicotencatl where the quality of this product allows us to export this vegetable at a good price to countries like the US and Canada.

"Onions are agriculturally important and Tamaulipas is a national leader in the production of red onion, with a standard production of 20,000 tonnes, and it is the only State that produces yellow onion, producing 34,000 tonnes per year."

Tamaulipas, he says, has 40 packaging and product selection centres as well as the Onion Product System, which trades onions to new national and international markets.
