India: High price for domestic onions

Vaidika has always tried to give the maximum to its customers by realizing their needs and requirements at the most optimum time. For that, every year we are in contact with the most hard working and willing farmers of the onion producing region of the state in order to maintain the best quality without destructing the natural essence and pungency of the product.

"We have contracts with lots of farmers, a combination of which exceeds 2000 acres. Different batches of farmers have been under contract for white and pink onions from their specific regions for the best variety cultivation which are of export quality. For white onion, the common varieties cultivated are Agrifound White, Pusa White Round and Phule Safed. For Pink onions, the most commonly cultivated varieties are, Baswant 780, Agrifound Light Red, N-2-4-1 and N 53.

The sign of higher prices started showing all over the country during the initial months of 2013 due to drought conditions faced in 2012 in the major part of the onion producing area of the country.

The production decreased to a much lower level and so the reserved stock headed to the market. Meanwhile, for the next production season, the heavy rainfall destroyed the germinated crops to a much extended level, which made a gap of four months, when there is no stock and no new production in the country.

In August, 2012, the price per Kg was INR 10, but in the same month in 2013, the price per Kg was INR 55. Instead of the increasing value of USD, the rate of onions for export is not coming down due to very high domestic prices.

It is estimated that, the good production and affordable price of pink onions will start with the harvesting of the new crop in the month of October. The production of white onions will not face any problems because the harvesting season starts in the month of January and this is a year marked with heavy rainfall in all the white onion producing regions of the state. We have exported onions for many years to the different parts of the world, which include Europe, Africa and Russia to our repeated clients.
