Turkish lemon season promises bigger volumes

With the Turkish lemon season about a month away, growers and shippers are anticipating volumes larger than the ones seen last year.

“This year, we expect 30% more lemons than last year,” said Aysel Oguz, export specialist for Eren Tarim. “The quality is also looking good.” More volume, however, could lead to lower prices and though it's impossible to predict with any certainty at this point, Oguz said they're bracing for prices lower than last year's.

The Turkish export season will begin around the end of September with shipments of Meyer and Interdonato varieties, and Oguz said her company is using the upcoming Asia Fruit Logistica trade show in early September as a way to connect with their Asian customers.

“The timing of the fair is very suitable for us to talk to our customers about the upcoming lemon season,” said Oguz. “As the distance between Turkey and our customers in Asia is pretty big, Asia Fruit Logistica makes it easy for us all to meet in one place to discuss our cooperation.”
