"Guus Treuen: "Larger sorting capacity than competing machines"

Marcelissen captures American market with roll sorter

Machine manufacturer Marcelissen from Belfeld, The Netherlands, has been active in the food and vegetable processing industry for more than sixty years. "We supply quite a number of machines for processing potatoes and carrots," Guus Treuen explains.

Amongst others screw de-stoners, de-stoner washer, drum roller peelers, drum knife peeler, drum roller brushing machines, washers, sorting machines, weighing machines, sliver removers, carrot plug cutting machines and cutting machines are part of the exclusive assortment from Marcelissen.

During the United Fresh in San Diego (US) the emphasis was on the new roller sorter. "In contrast to the local manufacturers we work with thin rollers with the result that
that we have a larger sorting capacity on the same area and are in a position to move the product well," Guus explains.

"The advantage is also that we can minimize the number of 'snippers' amongst the chips to maximum five per kg. We are the only ones realizing this. Unfortunately quality control is often limited to hygiene and not the external quality, as those can in any case be sold under private label or B-mark."

Also for the knife peeling machine the manufacturer sees a lot of potential on the American market. This machine is now already at the growers sorting potatoes for the large chip factories. Green spots or scabies, which are not removed by the steam peeler, we can handle correctly with the knife peeler. The knife peelers are not themselves manufactured in the United States."

Many roller sorters were sold by Guus during the last years to pistachio nut processors. "That is a really upcoming market, although I expect the market to be full within a few years. As far as that goes applications for freshly cut vegetables and fruit, such as peaches and tomatoes, are expected to do better. We expect a lot from this in the future."

Also in South American countries we still have a lot of work to do. We are very busy appointing agents willing to sell our machines, It remains a big challenge to find good people for this. On the other hand working globally offers great opportunities, because if sales stagnate in a certain area there are then sufficient upcoming countries ready to take over."
