Spain: Murcia increases its surface area of melon cultivation
Melon Galia has experienced a rise and its average price ranges between 0.65-0. 70€/kg, the Piel de Sapo melon ranges between 0.95-1.10€/kg and the first batches of yellow melon are between 0.50-0.60€/kg. The quantities traded of the three types of melon are minority. Initial estimates suggest a reduction in the surface area of Cantaloup in Almería, the leading producer of this type of melon. Morocco and France have followed the same line, however, Murcia appears to have increased the surface area of this crop. Morocco is completing production of Cantaloup, while France will begin their campaign in late May.
The black watermelon with seeds is at prices that range from 0.50 to 0.55 € / kg, while the striped watermelon ranges from 0.60 to 0.65 €/ kg and the black seedless is at 0.90 €/ kg. The reduced supply faces intense domestic and international demand. The product is mainly being exported to Germany and Eastern Europe. An increase between 15-25% over last season in the surface area of planted watermelon in the East coast of Granada is estimated. These plantations come into production in the second half of May.
