Honduras: Melon producers hope to export $52 million

Melon producers in the departments of Choluteca and Valle (Honduras) hope to continue the sector’s good moment and increase exports by about 3 million dollars in the current agricultural year.

Projections for the present crop are to export between 50 and 52 million dollars, higher than the 49.4 million generated last year.

According to statistics from the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), melon exports generated US $ 42.2 million in 2009, reached 42.9 million in 2010 and increased to 53.9 million in 2011.

According to company executives exporting climate conditions in the South of the country during the current crop favored the cultivation of fruit, mainly in the first harvest, which began last October.

For this harvest, farmers cultivated around 4,200 hectares in both departments, placing an emphasis on the Galia, Honeydew, Charentais and Piel de Sapo varieties of cantaloupe.
