Europe largest banana importer worldwide

The European Union is the largest consumer and importer of bananas in the world. In 2011, people in the EU consumed about 5.2 million tons of bananas. Approximately 4.6 million tons of these were imported. Approximately 611,000 tons were produced within the EU - mainly on the Canary Islands. Approximately 70% of the bananas sold in the EU come from Central and South American countries, mainly from Ecuador, Colombia and Costa Rica. African, Caribbean and Pacific countries such as the Dominican Republic, Cameroon and Ivory Coast yield approximately 20%.

For nearly 20 years there was a dispute concerning EU import rights on bananas from Latin American countries. A 2009 agreement put the issue to rest. In November 2012, at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, the trade dispute was officially solved. In the EU, tariffs on Latin American bananas are gradually reduced - from 148 Euro per ton in 2009 and 132 Euro per ton in the current year, to 114 Euro in 2017.
