Brazil: More European avocado export expected this year

Avocado season is underway in Brazil and with it the shipments to Europe that account for 90% of the country's Hass production. Ligia Falanghe Carvalho of Jaguacy Avocados, one of the country's largest producers and exporters, says the quality of this year's crop is "Marvellous!"

The season usually runs from February-October, though Ligia explains that the last two season have seen production extended almost year round to December. the bulk of export trade, though, she says, is within the boundaries of the typical season.

What doesn't get shipped to Europe is consumed domestically. This usually amounts to around 400 tons per year. Traditional avocado consumption in Brazil involves blending with milk and tropical sugars, though Hass consumption in salads or as guacamole is catching on.

Ligia says last year saw Brazil export 120 containers of Hass to Europe; a figure that is expected to rise to 160 containers this year, as new production comes into line. Ligia says new growers are attracted to the industry by the potential of the European marketplace.
