According to Francisco Huergo Maurin, the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sedrua), Canada can be one of the main markets for Michoacan's limes.
Michoacan is Mexico's second biggest producer of limes, with 475,000 tons annually, which is 23 percent of the total national production, only surpassed by Veracruz, and followed by Colima and Oaxaca. Lime exports amount to 500 thousand tons, most of which is shipped to the US (90%)
Within the framework of the 'Strengthening the Capacity to Successfully Export Food Products to Canada' workshop, they also commented that "there were many other products like this fruit that don't have a major impact on other countries and that are necessary for them," the secretary added.
Huergo Martin also said that Michoacan exports 18 thousand tons of avocado per week, 62 thousand tons of mango a year, and 240 thousand tons of strawberry per year.
In turn, Sergio Rios, the regional coordinator of Pro Mexico, asked producers to remain calm regarding the political situation between the US and Mexico. He also guaranteed that they wouldn't stop exporting to this country, but acknowledged that they also had to look for other international markets.
