"Making Guatemala an Exporting Country"

Guatamala will again participate in this year's Fruit Logistica, for the 6th consecutive year. Monica Figueroa, of Agexport, says, "The event is a great opportunity for Guatemala because of the Association agreement with the European Union, which will provide increased export and product diversification."

The negotiation of the Association Agreement between the EU and Central America is of great importance to the country's agricultural sector, as Europe is the world's largest fresh produce importer.

"Europe is already an important market for Guatemala," Monica says. "representing 8% of total export trade."

"We see significant potential growth in our trade with Europe in fruit and vegetables and expect to increase exports to 8%."

Guatemala has already been working hard to increase its exports and has participated widely in trade fairs in Europe in recent years and was also active in negotiations leading to the Association Agreement, as well as carrying out promotional activities on behalf of its exporters.

The stand at this year's Fruit Logisitca will cover 66 square metres, hosting 8 companies and a total of 25 delegates.

Participation has already been confirmed for Frutesa - who will be promoting Meyer lemons at the show; San Juan Agroexport; Ixin Quesal; Deinsa; Cooperativa de Mujeres Cuatro Pinos; Covesa; Excard and Rivexport.

A business meeting agenda has been established to enable meetings to take place between the delegations and European based importers.

A major focus for Guatemala at the show will be the promotion of its own event, Agritrade, taking place in Antigua, Guatemala, on the 14th and 15th March 2013.

Monica says, "To contribute to the show's goal of "Making Guatemala an exporting country" the organising committee has selected Europe as a target market. It is intended that 30 European companies will participate."

News of the show was announced in June and, by November, 90% of exhibition space had been sold, with pavilions confirmed by both Central America and Europe.
