Italian Mazzoni Group in Berlin to promote summer fruit

For the Italian leading group Mazzoni, 2013 and Fruit Logistica begin in the name of Summer. Technicians campaign and traders are in fact already working to promote the season of colorful Italian fruit: strawberries, peaches, nectarines, seedless melons and watermelons, apricots, plums, all strictly cultivated in the best areas the country.

"Summer 2013 is the season in which we materialize and consolidate the investments made in recent years in stone fruit, especially peaches and nectarines, in Calabria and Romagna regions, where the types of fruit growing techniques used - "Y" and "Catalan Vase" - guarantee the quality of the fruit, but also a better orchard management by producers", said Sergio Trevisan (pictured), commercial director of the group.

"In addition to traditional varieties of peaches and nectarines, in the 2013 season - continues Trevisan - new variety with yellow flesh, 100% color, crispy and consistent with their organoleptic characteristics allow our group to cross the boundaries of the Italian market and satisfy our customers and, most importantly, consumers outside Europe. Finally, the climate characteristics of Calabria region allow us to guarantee a constant quality from May 20 to September 20."

Positive results are expected for new seedless varieties of melon and watermelon produced in Emilia-Veneto, Umbria, Tuscany and Apulia regions, which will occupy the fruit and vegetables benches of the main Italian and European supermarket chains.

"The 2013 will see the emergence of a new variety of melon with a strong, vigorous and highly resistant plant - says Sergio Trevisan - The characteristics of color and aroma of the pulp, in particular, meet the needs of consumers in northern Europe; fruit sizes are from 0.9 and 1.4 kg; harvesting is scheduled from July to September."

Good news also for consumers of seedless watermelon: "A variety of emerging seedless watermelon will be proposed by the Mazzoni operators in 2013. Fruit sizes are from 2 to 5.5 kg and visual characteristics are similar to the cultivar C0 but the fruit is distinguished by crispy pulp, highest sugar percentage - minimum of 12° brix - and greater post-harvest storage potential. This variety will be on the market from mid-June until mid-September", says the sales manager, who continues: "We wanted to invest in this new cultivar, especially after the brilliant results of panel tests, aimed at consumers and conducted in some Italian and German distribution chains, last season. Hopefully the weather conditions will lend us a hand."

But it does not end here. "Already by the middle of February we will begin the marketing of strawberries from Salerno area (South Italy). Though premature, plants under tunnels are growing good, healthy, slightly late, thanks to the current temperatures which are favorable for a good crop. The conditions are all predicting a good campaign, both in quantitative and qualitative terms. The same applies to the fields of our growers in Verona."

In 2012, the sales of the organics branch of Mazzoni (verybio) ended well and above forecasts of growth, both in terms of volumes traded and turnover. For 2013, the group plans to consolidate Mazzoni European markets and lean out to new destinations such as the markets of North America and north-east. "Apples, pears, kiwis are the engines of this growth, confirming that a steady and experienced relationship with the production base is able to meet the demands of a difficult market like the organic one", said Trevisan.

Even the frozen food division of Mazzoni Group after having invested in infrastructure, technology and human resources in 2012, look at 2013 with a breath of fresh air from the point of view of production. The activity of the frozen is evolving and focusing - through a partnership with Italian producers and Eastern Europe - on the production and marketing of small fruits, biological, with total control on the production process. One of the novelties of 2013 are the fruit purees for the Horeca market, pastry and ice cream which will complement the range of fruits IQF (Individual Quick Freezing) in which the division frozen Mazzoni has been present for over 30 years.
