Germany: Asunción Export looking for opportunities at Fruit Logistica

Asunción Export, Guatemalan suppliers of mange tout and sugar snap peas to Europe, will be attending this year's Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February, as part of the CBI delegation, organised by the Netherlands Government.

The company has been involved with CBI for over 10 years now and the relationship has been very instrumental in shaping the what Asuncion trades, as Director, Alejandro Farfán Contreras explains.

"We started in 2001, when we attended a seminar for small to medium sized enterprises from developing countries, that were willing to export to Europe. CBI covered all the costs of participation.

"Back then we were totally focused on export to the US, but the seminar gave us such valuable insights into the potential of European markets."

Continued collaboration with CBI led to Asunción finding their first European client; with whom they have continued to trade for the past 10 years.

Following these development, CBI invited Asunción to attend Fruit Logistica in Berlin at the CBI booth, with other delegates from various Asian, African and Latin American countries. Again CBI covered the costs. The benefits of this to Asunción were clear to see.

"In our first experience of Fruit Logistica, as part of the CBI delegation, we were contacted by over 50 companies interested in our products. CBI's experts accompanied us during negotiations by giving us feedback regarding the prospects seriousness, size, paying behaviour etc. This was very useful in guiding us to the correct decisions.

Alejandro says he hopes attendance this year will help Asunción Exports to identify new opportunities.

"Lots of changes are taking place in the industry, with regards to regulations new people, new products and new opportunities," he says.

"We want to take a new look at the markets and explore new opportunities in terms of market segments, new geographic markets and new products. With these things in mind we can consider how Guatemala can adapt to the production of new fruits and vegetables.

"We are very focused on diversification in our production as, at the moment, we are exporting peas from November to May and we need year round activity to ensure employment to our workers. Baby vegetables, Oriental vegetables, French beans and other produce items, are all of interest to us if we can find the right customers to think about long term relationships and preparing for the next season."
