Spain: Catalonia tests hailstorm prediction system

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) is testing a system to predict hailstones, and what their intensity will be, half an hour before they take place, according to sources from the SMC.

This system, which could be very useful for agricultural producers, is called "Lightning Jump" and is based on the study of the electric shocks produced by the storms and an analysis of their zonal growth.

Weather forecasters working on the "Lighting Jump" system, who expect it to become operational next year, warn that it will be a predictive tool that will not prevent damage to agriculture, but will provide information on the magnitude of hailstorms.

The computer system will also allow insurers to more accurately estimate the economic losses caused by hailstorms, which weather forecasters predict will become increasingly intense because of climate change.
