Guava steady on smaller imports to Washington

Guava coming into the United States from Mexico is in good supply. Although the gap appears to be getting shorter each year, Ruben Cruz of Aztec Imports says if there is one it could happen in the next couple of weeks to a month or so. “The quality starts declining,” he said. “Quality now is still good, the flavor is good. They can be a little bit softer – they’re not holding up as long but they still eat good, which is important.”

Prices haven’t changed as far as he’s concerned; they’ve been steady for the entire year with no major fluctuations. While some fruits will be gearing up for Easter promotions, Cruz says his big push happens between October to December when shipments increase from 160 cases a week to 400 a week. Fruit is distributed throughout the western part of Washington State.

Demand is steady, having lowered after the past holiday season. They’re always on the lookout for new items to carry. Because Aztec Imports deals only with USA-based pickers and packers, they’re limited to what produce is already legal to import. “There’s a lot of fruit n Mexico that there’s a demand for but not legal yet, like guava was at one time,” he said. “We’re always looking for new varieties of fruit from Mexico that are not currently available here in the US.” One item on his wish list is Mexican Guanabana (or soursop).
