Estimated volume 3 million tons

Polish apple harvest up 10% on 2011

The Polish apple harvest is expected to be good this year, with an estimated volume of 3 million tons. This is an increase of 10% on last year.

According to Jan Novakowski, Genesis Fresh, the quality is very good, "the apples are well coloured, even some more than 50%, when in normal years it is about 30-40%."

This Spring Poland had a problem with hail, many orchards were destroyed, some by as much as 100%. In the Summer, when Western Europe was having problems with heavy rain, Poland was suffering from a draught. Therefore, the growth of apples was slightly slowed, but all of has not affected the overall harvest and volume this year.

The main variety grown in Poland is Idared, which is a hard, strong and good quality apple, good for long distance transport. The main export destination for Idared is Russia. The other main varieties grown in Poland are Champion, Gala, Gloster, Jonagold, De Costa, Ligol, Elstar, Golden Delicious.

For Polish apples the main market still is Russia and Eastern Europe countries. They export also to the UK, France, Germany, and other Western European markets. But still 60% of the export volume goes to Russian market.

Jan explains the changes in the apple business in Poland over the last few years, "There is growth in popular varieties like Gala, Golden Delicious and Champion. There are varieties which have better coloured skin, which find their way much easier onto customers’ tables. There are also many investments being made in terms of storage, sorting and packaging."

As Jan explained, storage facilities in Poland have improved significantly within the last 10 years. The technology is bought from professional equipment companies from Italy, France, or the Netherlands. These storage facilities have modern, state-of-the-art facilities, machines and equipment.

Genesis Fresh can provide quality Polish apples all year round, with different packaging possibilities. All sizes of apples are available and many varieties.
