Growing app Retail Spotters will soon also start with a wholesaler’s module

"We’ll make fresh produce trade transparent with Retail Spotters"

There will soon be fewer hidden surprises in the fresh produce sector. We can already find out how a fresh produce department looks in a supermarket in Bangkok or Madrid by pushing just a few buttons, and soon there will also be information about wholesaler’s markets.

“We are currently active in 65 countries, more than 90 cities and over 200 supermarkets in total,” says Martin Casanova, founder of the app, Retail Spotters.

Visits to supermarkets
At the start of 2017, the app Retail Spotters was introduced. The organisation behind the app is active globally, and gathers information about the fresh produce departments of retailers in various cities. The founder has a background in fresh produce. “People who are active in fruit and vegetables tend to travel a lot. During those travels abroad, I noticed almost everyone visits supermarkets to see how the products are presented. It seemed like a good plan to gather all that information in an app. The fresh produce sector could use that.”

Unique
He continues: “Traders used to get their information by personally visiting supermarkets or some paid for special reports. But there was nobody who gathered and spread all of the information about fruit and vegetables globally. It is completely new for the trade: they had never before had access to this much specific information.”

Network of ‘spotters’
The founder indicates that this app is interesting for everybody in the fresh produce sector. “The app has been especially designed for the fresh produce sector, though we also offer information on other products. For example, we have customers in the wine and olive oil sectors. We have built up our own network of people, or ‘spotters,’ who visit supermarkets. This ensures that the information given is correct and reliable. Our people make videos and photographs, and the information in the app is continuously updated. Because of our extensive network of almost 100 ‘spotters’ all over the world, users of the app can see how certain fruits and vegetables are presented by means of a photo. It is almost as if you are personally present in the supermarket at that moment. Users can get a lot of information, including prices, varieties, brands, origins and more. Retail Spotters gets this information during the observation of the fruits and vegetables in the visited supermarket.”

Payment
The app can be used free of charge, but you can also get a premium subscription. “This costs $9.90 per month. With premium, your searches can be more accurate, by specifying brand, origin or variety, for example. All users who download the app within the first six months of 2017, will get premium information for free. Additionally, we are planning to offer advertising possibilities on the app, and we will also make specific reports per customer.”

Growth
The growth is enormous. “Within five weeks, we already had almost 1,300 active users who signed up for the app. We are now working on the second part of our business plan. We are ready to launch this new module within the app with information from wholesaler’s market from all over the world. We are gathering the prices of products and also make graphs showing the evolution of the prices. With the two modules, retail and wholesaler’s, we have the fresh produce world in our hands. We want to help the fresh produce trade to get information, and to make everything surrounding fruits and vegetables more transparent.”
