Germany: Reduction of CO2 emissions with “Controlled Atmosphere”
An answer to urgent demands that are coming up
The focus of ecological discussions is the heavy burden CO2 places on the global climate
and the limited time available for counteractive measures. Due to new findings, these discussions
take place with an intensity and concern never seen before. The selected collection of
quotes attached underlines the explosiveness these themes already have in politics and media
reports.
In spite of this, we are just now only at the beginning of a profound stage of development. It is
foreseeable that the scope of air transport and especially that of air freight will be critically
scrutinised and with good reason:
If one compares the CO2 emissions per tonne of transported goods by air freight with those
coming from transport in a sea container, it is evident that air freight results in a considerably
higher amount of CO2 emissions than transport by sea (see attachment).
The consequences for fruit and vegetables? Renounce overseas goods and return to the
domestic shores? Definitely not – global commerce cannot be turned back. However, one
demand is foreseeable: if there must be global transport then it should be done in the most
environmentally friendly way.
Aside from the ethical aspects of the climate change, we are facing hard economical challenges.
Controlled Atmosphere provides an answer for perishable goods transport: sea transport
in a CA container with high quality results is already manifestly cheaper these days than
air freight and most notably results in only a fraction of the CO2 emissions.
