Peru: mango production reduced 46% in Lambayeque

Tholen - The region of Lambayeque has unfavourable weather conditions affecting the current campaign of mango which has suffered a reduction of production of about 46%. However, higher international prices sustain the business for the moment. In the campaign 2006/2007, the production has been 8454 tons while in the campaign 2005/2006 production achieved 18,118.

The officer of information at the regional Direction of Agriculture in Lamabyeque, Mario Jáuregui declared that constant weather fluctuations harmed the normal development of production. Currently, there are 2500 hectares of mango production in the region, particularly of the variety “Kent” and 90% of the total production is exported. He emphasized the importance of the production for the international markets. Peruvian mango has two different markets: the US and the EU. The US market requires a special hydrothermic treatment for its access while the EU does not require it and it is directly packed.
