Peru: ADEX wants to double non traditional agri-exports in four years

Tholen – The goal of doubling non traditional agri-exports is part of the strategy of the Peruvian Association of Exporters (ADEX) to achieve US$ 2400 million in 2011. According to ADEX, the synergies between the public and private sector are necessary to promote the “star products”: asparagus, mangoes, artichokes, bananas, avocados, grapes, pepper “piquillo”, pepper “morrón”, pottage and flowers. In addition, there is a group of newcomers that need also special promotion these are exotic products from the Andean regions: quinua, kiwicha, morón and tarwi.

The President of ADEX, Luis Vega declared that this goal requires a growing rate of 19% per year and added that last years the production has been above this. However, Mr. Vega warns governmental authorities that the goal requires a better supply of water and if necessary, rationing water to priority products for export (e.g. mangoes and organic bananas).
