Spain: persimmon an autumn fruit in spring

Tholen – The region of La Coruña (Spain) is receiving persimmon (kaki fruit) from Peru. Spain normally produces this fruit in autumn but the market access to fruits from the south hemisphere allows the current presense of the fruit in spring. However, the difference of prices is the cost that the consumer has to pay for enjoying this rare fruit in spring. In autumn the kilo costs about €1.50 at the market, these days the price can achieve €6 per kilo.

In Spain, there are producers in the region of Galicia and the southern provinces. The fruit is characterized as tropical but it has been adapted to temperate zones in Spain. The most commercial variety is “sharoni”. The success of the fruit among consumers is not a surprise, they can also enjoy persimmons in spring.
