Spain: growers discuss leaving Intercitrus
Tholen - The secretary general of the agricultural organisation La Unió de Llauradors-Coag, Josep Botella, publicly recognised that the organisation is discussing whether or not it will remain part of trade association Intercitrus. Although the internal debate is ongoing, no decision has been made thus far. The absence of answers from Intercitrus on the difficulties which threaten the profitability of the citrus cultivation, are amongst the reasons for the discussion about the membership.
Both Botella as under secretary Miquel Oltra accuse Intercitrus of inefficiency and of a lack willingness to solve the problems. Several members of Intercitrus make more money now than ever and they have manoeuvred themselves into positions of supreme power within the organisation, said Oltra. According to him Intercitrus has as little credibility as its’ president Antonio Muñoz who supposedly said, during a meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture, “let those who have problems speak out, because I don’t have them”.
