Peru: camu camu fruit exports increased 134,5%

Tholen - The Peruvian exports of the special healthy camu camu fruit, which is marketed as a health food, has increased with 134,5% in 2006. The turnover broke through the 2 mln. dollar barrierr with exports totalling 2,126 mln., compared to 906.585 dollar in 2005. The product is offered mostly in processed forms, creating added value. The most important market for the fruit from the Amazon jungle was Japan, with 80% of the total, followed by the US (12%) and The Netherlands (4%), Canada (1%) and Hong Kong (1%). The demand for this product is strengthened by the high vitamin C content, which is fifty times higher than oranges. This year an export turnover of 3 mln. dollar is expected.
