Spanish imports increase volumes, decrease prices

Tholen – In 2006, Spain imported 2 million tons in volume (5% less than 2005) or € 1198 million in value (4% more than 2005). As a result, the average prices increased 10%. Vegetable imports were 1,1 million tons (decrease of 4%) or € 457 million (increase of 19%) resulting in an increase on the average price of vegetables of 24%. Potatoes were the most imported vegetable with 785.243 tons (+1%) and a strong increase if value with 41% (total value in 2006 € 204 million).

Fruits decreased 7% in volume and 3% in value (978.251 tons and € 741 millions, respectively). Citrus and apples are the main fruit imports from Spain (178.075 tons and 172.795 tons, respectively). France is the first provider of fruits and vegetables in Spain (35,6% of the market share). The exchange ratio between imports and exports in the sector are contrasting, since the average price of imports increased 10% and exports decreased 4%.
