ASPROCAN concerned about prices of Canary bananas
Tholen – The President of the Association of Banana Growers of the Canary Islands (ASPROCAN), Manuel Lorenzo Pérez, expresses the concerns of the association for the low prices paid to the growers. Between December 2006 and January 2007, the association advised to reduce the production to control the falling prices.
According to Mr. Lorenzo Pérez, “the market was recovering in January a 96,54% with respect to December, (but December was disastrous) this is insufficient to cover the minimum rents of producers”. According to ASPROCAN, the prices to the consumer are extremely high compared with the producer prices making differentials between 263% and 400%. Therefore, in the next Marketing Committee of the association, Mr. Lorenzo Pérez will ask for additional sacrifices to the producers since the current situation is unsustainable.
Prices in December and January compared with the same period in the last year are between 22% and 62% lower depending on the reference week. However consumer prices are without significant changes. Mr. Lorenzo Pérez stated that the marketing companies in the peninsula have strong concerns not only with bananas but also with citrus because of the chaotic signals of the market.
