European Union increased banana imports with 12,3% in 2006
Tholen - The countries of the European Union imported 12,3% more bananas in 2006 than in 2005, according to information of the European Commission. Total imports amounted 4.185.000 MT. The strongest increases applied to imports from ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific), as former European colonies, with an average increase of 18,6%. Especially Jamaica and Ghana showed strong increases, with 173% and 478% respectively. Cameroon and Ivory Coast held their positions as primary ACP suppliers, with 53% of total ACP exports.
