Pakistan: kinnow mandarins soar to Rs120 per dozen

The price of kinnow has skyrocketed to Rs120 per dozen as against Rs60 per dozen at the start of the month due to short supply and low crops in the aftermath of virus attacks.

Moreover, the recent snowfall in NWFP destroyed the crops and changed the taste and mass of remaining crops. In Punjab also severe chill has almost frozen the citrus fruits in orchids. Some farmers say that the virus attack on crops early in the season destroyed a large number of orchids. Fumigation failed to protect crops from virus in most instances.

General Secretary Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters and Processors said the production of kinnow has suffered 30 per cent wastage during the recent season. It is observed that the production of orange is not same every year. Last year it was high this year it is low. However, he said the export target may difficult to achieve due to shortage of production but the exporters have found some new markets such as Russia and Far East countries, which could assist to meet the target in terms of export earnings.

He added that small units of food processors incurred losses particularly manufacturers of juices, jams and jellies on account of higher rates of citrus. The juice shops and restaurant have also increased their rates by Rs10 to Rs20 per glass of orange juice.

Banana prices have also surged to Rs35 per dozen from Rs20 per dozen as compare to last month as season crops (Rabi) have finished its production while the apple prices has also soared to Rs70 per kg from Rs40 per kg in last month as it is witnessing season end.
