Italy first, Greece second and Spain third producer of organic citrus

Tholen - According to the association for organic agriculture CAAE in Spain, the organic citrus acreage is the largest in Italy, with 15.000 hectare. After Italy and Greece, Spain is the third producer of organic citrus, with an acreage of 1810 hectare, of which the largest part is concentrated in Andalusia. Here organic citrus is grown on an acreage of 1234 hectare, followed by Valencia with 314 hectare and Murcia with 183 hectare, followed by a number of other regions with a negligible acreage. While Valencia is the largest grower of conventional citrus in Spain, Andalusia heads the list where organic is concerned, with 478 hectare in Almería, 298 ha in Malaga, 232 in Huelva and 114 in Sevilla.
