Eurofresh Farms and Earthcycle Packaging introduce ”cherry pick” compostable packaging
Eurofresh Farms’ cherry tomatoes on-the-vine are now being shipped in a pack that’s as sweet environmentally as the fruit it protects. The home compostable Earthcycle packaging comes from the earth and, when it’s finished protecting and displaying the cherry tomatoes, returns to the earth through normal composting.

“Eurofresh Farms has a strong commitment to being environmentally friendly, through water conservation and pesticide free practices,” commented Shannon Boase, founder and president of Earthcycle Packaging. “We are happy to be able to provide a next step environmentally conscious packaging option to Eurofresh Farms and their customers.”
Earthcycle’s produce trays are made from molded palm fiber, a waste product left over after the palm fruit is harvested and pressed for oil. Previously incinerated or landfilled, this fiber is now made into FDA food grade packaging which is certified compostable (ASTM D6400). Just pitch it in the home compost and, in less than 90 days, it will biodegrade and be ready to make a healthy contribution to the soil.
“Earthcycle provides a complete solution—sturdy packaging that protects product integrity and offers ease of disposal in the backyard compost,” said Dwight Ferguson, CEO of Eurofresh Farms. “The potential reduction in waste is an environmental benefit we are very pleased to offer.” Eurofresh Farms plans to expand their use of this innovative packaging to a broader range of tomatoes varieties in the future.
