Spain: thousands of kilos of citrus not harvested in Almeria

Since a few years, citrus business in Almeria is in crisis. The situation of this season is even worse, with prices that have not been higher than € 0.25/kilo.
Almerian producers of the regions Bajo Almanzora and Bajo Andarax, where citrus cultivation is concentrated, are seriously harmed by this crisis. Thousands of oranges, mandarins and lemons will not be harvested and stay on the trees this campaign.

However, citrus production in Andalucía is still increasing. Compared to last year, another 500 hectares have been taken into production. The production in tons has decreased from 238.200 tons in last year to 232.153 tons this year. With actual prices, producers cannot recover their production costs.
