Spain: Albacete expects a 350k MT onion harvest
Tholen – The Spanish Albacete province expects a 350.000 MT harvest of onions this campaign. This is a normal quantity and the production reaches the same level as last year. Everywhere in Castilla-La Manche the crop quality is good, expect in the regions which have been hit by hail earlier in August, according to growers organisation Procecam from Castilla-La Mancha. The acrege in the Albacete province amount around 5000 hectares.
Presently, the Grano onion campaign is bound to start. These onions currently cost between 10 and 12 cents per kg at the growers. About 80% of the onion production in Albacete is destined for the export, the UK and Germany being the main export destinations. The total onion production in Castilla-La Manche amount about 600.000 MT. Thus the Albacete production accounts for more than half of the total production. La Roda, Barrax, Tarazona de La Mancha, Pozo Cañada and Minaya are Albacete’s main production regions.
