Philippines: Leyte launches agri-based projects to improve farmers’ income

The province of Leyte will launch two agri-based projects next week aimed at improving the lives of Leyte farmers. This was learned from Provincial Agriculturist Loretto Yu who assumed his post at the start of this week.

The first project which will be launched on January 23 at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon at the DepEd Leyte Division office, is the Income Creating Opportunity Through Technology (ICOT-T).

ICOT-T will be piloted in identified high schools at the municipalities of Burauen, Baybay, Tanauan, Alangalang, Villaba and Kananga. Fourth year high school students who are definitely not able to proceed to college after graduation will be enrolled in a special curriculum where technology training like high value commercial crops and poultry production, are incorporated.

The other project which is a pet project of Congresswoman Remedios L. Petilla and the province of Leyte is the Development of Abaca-based Agri-business Project which will be launched at Barangay Santol, San Miguel, Leyte on January 27 at 9:00 o’clock in the morning.

The project at Barangay Santol covers 75 hectares which will be planted with abaca and will benefit 150 farmers who were trained on abaca farming.

Congresswoman Petilla will also implement the same project in Babatngon and in the other municipalities of the first district of Leyte depending on the availability of land which maybe planted with abaca.

This project will save the abaca industry in the Region which was destroyed because of the infestation of abaca disease. Closely coordinating are government agencies like FIDA, DA, PCA, DTI and ATI.
