Bangladesh: bumper jackfruit output in Brahmanbaria likely

Bumper production of jackfruits is expected in the district this year due to favourable weather, according to sources. This season the weather was very favourable for production of jackfruit, a highly nutritious fruit and no natural calamity affected the jackfruit trees in the district, sources said. Singarbil, Mukandapur, Chaturpur, Paharpur and Champaknagar of Sadar Upazila are the best jackfruit producing areas in the district, they added.

Different varieties of jackfruits are produced in the district. No authentic statistics of jackfruit trees and its production are available in the local Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) as they do not maintain any data in this connection, sources alleged. As per unofficial statistics, there are about 2.5 million jackfruit trees in the district.

Each tree bears 25 to 200 fruits every year. Due to favourable weather this year, the owners of the trees are expecting bumper production of jackfruit this year. But, due to lack of processing and storage facilities a huge quantity of jackfruits and other fruits get rotten in the district every year.
