Bangladesh: bumper litchi production in B'baria
Farmers in Brahmanbaria district are expecting a bumper production of litchi, a delicious summer fruit, this year. Golapi', 'Bedana', 'Bombi', 'Miraji', 'Kathali', 'Sitamati' and 'China-3' varieties of litchis are produced in the district. The harvesting of this summer fruit has already begun and it has started arriving in the local markets. ''We'll have a good harvest this year as both the temperature and rainfall favoured the growth of litchi this year'', said a litchi farmer of Mukundapur village under Sadar Upazila of the district.
Although different varieties of litchis, including the hybrid ones, are available in the local markets, the prices are still beyond the reach of common buyers. Currently, every 100 litchis are being sold in local markets at Tk 125 to Tk 150. According to the experts of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office in Brahmanbaria, favourable weather is one of the reasons for the bumper litchi production this year.
