Spain: Extremadura agriculture recovers from 2005 crisis
Tholen – The agriculture in the Spanish autonomous region Extremadura is recovering of the crisis of the year 2005. Last year has been one of the worst years of the past decennia, according to Ignacio Huertas of the agricultural organisation UPA. Drought, frost, phytosanitary matters and diseases have negatively affected the sector, but presently it has rained and the season is developing normally, for as far as one can speak of normal, says Huertas. As irrigation has been possible until present, the most important threat to Extremaduran agriculture is concentrated in the CMO reforms, which will have negative consequences for tomato cultivation, but also for the grape sector in Extremadura. Extremadura also holds 26% of the national asparagus production and 18% of cherry production, which is known for its ‘Picotas del Jerte’.
