Chile: Becoming a trade platform for export to Asia
Tholen - By means of a free-trade agreement with China, which will be active as of July, Chile hopes to become an export platform for the food export from South America to China. The huge market offers plenty possibilities for more than only the Chilean export. Therefore also Peru, Bolivia and Argentina will be able to profit from this opportunity. Within 10 years, Chile hopes to agree upon a free-trade zone with China.
Furthermore, the opening of the South Korean market for Chilean citrus shows interesting opportunities for Chilean fruit exporters. Lemons, grapes and kiwifruits were already exported to these markets. The Chilean orange production was mainly exported to Japan (54%), Europe (23%) and Canada (20%) until now. Chile strives to expand the import authorisation to be able to export mandarins as well.
