Brazil: Santa Catarina State Launches the Scheme “More Fruit in Schools”

On Wednesday, September 20, Santa Catarina State’s Education Secretary launched in partnership with ABPM – Brazilian Association of Apple Producers the Scheme “More Fruit in Schools”. State authorities from education, health and agriculture areas, Brazilian apple producers, ABPM and the directors of the 275 schools involved in the Scheme attended the event, which will begin with apples in a pilot project format that will have 4 deliveries and will reach about 134.000 pupils.

This initiative intends following the same way as “School Fruit and Vegetables Scheme” created for United Kingdom’s Government, and aims beyond offering an apple for children, the development of pedagogic activities that promote good consumption habits, and also let the pupils know the history of Apple industry in Brazil, its production process and social-economic importance.

Statistics show that Brazilian children especially those in low income classes have more and more inadequate alimentation. So educational professionals and Brazilian apple producers are stimulated to do their best in order to make “More Fruit in Schools” program a great success, that will bring other fruits and will widen the Scheme to all schools in the State.
