Costa Rica: exports of bananas have declined

Tholen - During the first semester of this year the exports of Costa Rican bananas have declined. This also caused the income of foreign currencies to diminish. Corbana reports that sales have decreased by 16% from 52,5 mln. boxes in 2004 to 44 mln. this year. About 76% of the plantations are affected by the situation. The income during the first semester has dropped with 15% from $ 281 mln. to $ 240 mln. compared to last year. Nonetheless, the banana trade has grown with 6% on world scale to 337 mln. boxes, showing growth for Ecuador, Colombia, the Philippines and Guatemala.
