Kaufland enters Romania

The Lidl & Schwarz group has this week opened its first store in Romania, a Kaufland compact hypermarket in the capital Bucharest. Newspaper reports suggest that this will be the first of five Kaufland compact hypermarkets that the group will open in different towns across Romania during the remainder of 2005.

Kaufland plans to operate a portfolio of 40 stores within the next three to five years, and a central distribution centre in Ploiesti. Each compact hypermarket will be 3,000 to 4,000 sq m.
