Australian Finger Lime: the caviar of fruits
When most people thought there is little left to be discovered in the fruit world, some new fruits are in the process of commercialisation within Australia. These new fruits are being developed from what is sometimes referred to as ‘bush foods’ or ‘native foods’.
The Australian Finger Lime Company is leading the industry in the commercialisation of the native lime fruits. The first native citrus to go commercial is named Australian Finger Lime. There are many different varieties of Australian finger lime and it is a true member of the Citrus fruit family. The only commercial crops in the world are under development in Australia, with Plant Breeders Rights (BPR status) for some varieties. 16 years of research have resulted in the present selection of commercial varieties made by the Australian Finger Lime Company.
The present growing scale is still small, with fruit available from January to April. Australian Finger Lime Company is rapidly increasing this offer, with large plantings being prepared in several Australian States and availability growing steadily each year. Special varieties that are ever bearing are also planted to eventually give 12 months of supply. The fruit is marketed under the ‘OZLIME’ Brand and varieties sold under this Brand have been fully tested for commercial trading.
Some samples of fruit receive interest from a number of countries in Europe, the Middle East and South-east Asia, which currently only offer quarantine access. From the current knowledgebase on the fruit it is clear that there are few pest risks to induce a quarantine barrier. Market access should therefore not be a major obstacle to the growth of this new fruit.
This lime fruit is totally unique and is used commercially by hotels, restaurants and catering. It can be used in many ways and complements the culture of cooking. Also the retail is expected to introduce the fruit in time, but first the necessary volume of fruit to service this type of buyer is needed.
The Australian Finger Lime is a perfect example of a sustainable agricultural crop. It requires no artificial insecticides or fertilizers to produce a good crop and after being firmly established for some years, it can survive with minimal water in difficult times. This lime is chemical free and possibly the purest way to get your Lime or Lemon citrus flavour. At the same time it is extremely beautiful and multi-faceted in natural colours.
