Ramadan sees price hikes for fruits and vegetables in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

A state media market survey reported a 40 percent hike in prices of fruits and vegetables in Islamabad and Rawalpindi during the first half of Ramadan. The increase affected a range of produce including onions, tomatoes, peas, cabbage, apple gourd, garlic, ginger, beans, cucumber, carrots along with fruits such as apples, pomegranates, bananas, citrus fruits, and oranges.

For instance, apples have been selling for Rs 250 to Rs 300, pomegranates for Rs 350 to 400, and bananas for Rs 250 to Rs 300 per kilo/dozen. Vegetable prices also surged, with peas at Rs 200, cucumbers at Rs 120, and apple gourds at Rs 150 per kilogram. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) recorded an increase in the Sensitive Price Index (SPI) from 315.31 points to 319.30 points for the week.
