In an effort to diminish Ghana's reliance on imported tomatoes and peppers, Nikgroup Farm, a private entity, has announced plans to develop tomato and pepper farms spanning 200 ha in Akuse, Eastern region of Ghana. This initiative is poised to generate significant employment, particularly for the youth, across this expansive agricultural venture.
The project's inception is timely, addressing the critical challenge of importing a substantial share of the nation's tomato and pepper requirements. "The decision to set up the large-scale farm comes at a crucial time when Ghana is grappling with the challenges of importing a significant portion of its tomato and pepper needs," stated Nick Owusu, CEO of Nikgroup Farm, in a dialogue with the Ghanaian Times. He emphasized the farm's role in bolstering food security, economic growth, and self-sufficiency within Ghana.
Owusu envisions the project as a stepping stone towards Ghana's capability to satisfy its tomato and pepper demands domestically, utilizing Akuse's fertile lands, modern farming techniques, and the diligence and dedication of the workforce to be employed. The initiative also aims to offer employment and training opportunities for the youth, fostering a new generation of agricultural professionals and entrepreneurs.
